Mozart’s Midlife Crisis
Steven Machtinger is a violist and lawyer who currently serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Marin Symphony Association. A graduate of Harvard College and the UCDavis law school, he also studied with the legendary violist Lillian Fuchs. In parallel with a career as securities lawyer, he has presented lectures, performances, and papers throughout the United States and abroad on the life and music of Wolfgang Amadè Mozart. His article “Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Metaphysics” was published in Acta Musicologica, the journal of the International Musicological Society, and his paper “Vestiges of Plague Literature in Mozart’s Idomeneo” is pending publication as a chapter of the book Mozart in Salzburg (editor, Simon P. Keefe.) Mozart’s Midlife Crisis and Emergence of His Late Style is the working title of his current book in process. He and his wife Susan make their home in Tiburon, where they raised their two children.
