Saving the Monarchs

For 25 years, Monarch whisperer Mia Monroe, a founder of the Xerces Society’s Western Monarch Count, has been helping community scientists collect data about the migration habits—from the Mendocino coast to Northern Baja— of the endangered western monarch butterfly population. Her dedication to butterflies dates to childhood, when her grandmother took her to Pacific Grove to see the overwintering monarchs, and has led to a career in public service. A recently retired national park ranger at Muir Woods, she has good news to report about monarch conservation efforts.
